Nocturnal behavior, startling screams, and mythology regarding some lemur species as holding the spirits of ancestors are thought to contribute to their ghostly name connection. The aye-aye is at the center of countless myths on the island of Madagascar, with many locals holding the belief that an encounter with the aye-aye brings great misfortune. Some Malagasy even believe that the aye-ayes are man-eaters, which is why you should never leave your village in the dark. In reality, the aye-aye leads a solitary life and is nocturnal, meaning an encounter with this unique lemur is rare.
