Rusty is a four-year-old, long-eared owl at @wildwoodtrustuk. The feathers on Rusty’s
head may look like ears and are sometimes called ear tufts, but they are actually head feathers which he can raise when alarmed. Despite having an extremely large home range, the decline of this species is concerning. In Britain, decreases in population are thought to be connected to the expanding tawny owl population. Both species need space, food, and nest sites, which leads to fierce competition. Owls like Rusty serve as ambassadors for their wild counterparts at Wildwood where visitors have the opportunity to fully appreciate the beauty of this species and learn more about the threats they face in nature.
