Sometimes nicknamed “living fossils”, African lungfish have survived unchanged for nearly 400 million years, with some remarkable adaptations.
It may sound like an April Fool’s Day prank, but I’m not kidding when I tell you these fish actually have two lungs which enable them to breathe air! This is a vital feature because they live in floodplains that often dry up. To manage this life-threatening situation, the lungfish secretes a thin layer of mucus around itself, which dries into a cocoon, preserving body fluids and enabling the animal to live out of water for up to a year, breathing through its lungs until rain refills local waterways. The West African lungfish also hibernates in water. It digs its burrow using its mouth, chewing through the moist earth, excreting the mud through its gills. They have limbs which help them traverse dry areas in a mammalian manner.
The African lungfish is a perfect example of how the evolutionary transition from breathing water to breathing air can happen.
