Lyle, a male drill, lived at @zooatl before passing away in June 2013 at almost 21. His care team remembers him for his sweet disposition, his enjoyment of social interactions with the female drills who shared his habitat, his fondness for enrichment objects, and his habit of closely watching his human observers.
Drills are among Africa’s most endangered mammal species. Their wild populations have faced serious declines for decades as a result of habitat loss and unsustainable hunting for the bushmeat trade. Zoo Atlanta has supported drill conservation projects in Nigeria, where this animal still roams free. The Zoo also works to raise awareness of the impact of the bushmeat trade on numerous species of African wildlife.
