@pritch5 ⚫️ Paul Pritchard and me met in the early 90s while on expedition in Patagonia. He was a riot at camp and built the same “go for it” attitude of heady British trad climbing into the big mountains. Caution was stripped by the fierce winds and left Paul with determination and perseverance. ⛰⛰⛰ A few years later Paul was climbing on the Totem Pole, the world’s most iconic sea stack, located in Tasmania. Luck, circumstance, fate and / or whatever played the bad card and Paul suffered what would have been a fatal accident had it not been the strength that brought him to the cliffs in the first place. This was his second serious accident. ??? The effect of this harrowing event is hard to fathom unless you have been there. In the days and months after the accident Paul wrote “The Totem Pole” in which he revisits the accident and all that happened. While never directly asking why we climb he tries to makes sense of the crazy past-time that brings so much yet at the blink of an eye takes everything away. ??? “The Totem Pole” went on to win the Boardman-Tasker and the Banff Book awards, still the only book to be honored with bi continental praise. When we met again it was November 1999. My life was haywire and Paul inscribed an old sailor’s axiom in “The Totem Pole”. • All storms pass. • Simple, to the point and with just the right amount of optimism to keep your eye on the horizon. ??? The book has been out of print. Wether you are a survivor or are fascinated by life this is a must read book. Paul is crowd sourcing a second printing for the 20th Anniversary. Lets team up and bring this classic back to to the printed page. We have five days to make the goal. ??? https://pozible.com/project/the-totem-pole-20-years-on Link in profile. Thanks Paul. You are the best.
