@snow.science 1/3 ❄️ If you are a winter backcountry enthusiast and enjoy sliding down mountains you are in danger of getting trapped in an avalanche. It’s simply part of the risk we accept in return for the fun of exploration and reward of challenging your self. How do we balance this? We learn about the terrain, study the conditions, check the local avalanche advisory (if available) and make decisions that can affect the eventual outcome of a day in the mountains. While we study the physics of snow there is little research into the process of selecting a route. The team at the Snow Science Department at @montanastateuniversity has developed a study to better understand how we make decisions while in the backcountry. The White Heat Tracks is an opportunity for you to be part of this research.
