@snow.science ❄️ 2/3 Dr Jordy Hendrikx is the lead researcher for The White Heat Tracks project. Jordy knows the down side of being in avalanche terrain. Snow kills. “Avalanches aren’t just acts of God,” notes Jordy. “About 90 percent of avalanche victims trigger the avalanche themselves.” This project aims to collect GPS location information and survey responses from backcountry skiers and riders to better understand what types of terrain decision we make. Our focus is on backcountry skiers and riders of all abilities and experience. You need not be an expert backcountry skier to participate in this research.

The project is collaboration between a group of researchers at UiT The Arctic University of Norway, in Tromsø; Montana State University, in Bozeman, USA; and Umeå University, in Umeå, Sweden. The home of the project is at the Centre for Avalanche Research and Education (CARE) at UiT.

Please visit the http://www.montana.edu/snowscience/tracks.html web page, download @mtnhub or Ski Tracks to create a GPS file of your backcountry visitation and become part of the survey. By better understanding how we make “the call” in dangerous situations we can be safer. ? Everest Panorama 2nd ? @mtnhub
