Wild yaks (Bos mutus) have more than a thick coat of fur to keep them comfortable in their frigid, high-elevation native habitats throughout the Tibetan Plateau. For one, they have relatively few sweat glands, which minimizes heat loss. Yaks also have large lungs and abundant red blood cells, so they are efficient at taking in and absorbing oxygen from thin air in mountainous areas. They hydrate by eating ice and snow. Because of their numerous adaptations to living at lower temperatures, wild yaks avoid warmer climates and seasonally migrate to cooler environments.
