In Hinomisaki Bay, off the westernmost part of the Shimane Peninsula, lies the island of Fumishima. Both the land and sky are covered with black-tailed gulls (Larus crassirostris, or ‘umineko’), for which Fumishima is a breeding ground. Designated a Natural Monument of the Nation by the Japanese government, the island also has a small shrine that is off limits to visitors. Once a year in August, Shinto priests are allowed to enter and perform special rites.
