The desperate message “HELP” is seen on the lawn of a home near Utuado, Puerto Rico, in early October. Photographer @andreskudacki, who was covering the aftermath of Hurricane Maria for TIME, came across this scene during a helicopter flyover in the central mountainous region, where rescuers had previously searched for those in need. Police who originally saw the sign landed to find people without food or water, isolated as a nearby river swelled. The Category 4 storm, which made landfall on Sept. 20, may be the most destructive Atlantic storm on record. At least 45 people are known to have died, and the death toll is expected to climb. Along with the creaking electrical grid, Maria took down the water supply. About 85 percent of Puerto Rico’s residents still lack power, and many are without running water. President Trump recently visited the U.S. territory and requested billions of dollars in disaster aid. On Oct. 12, in a series of tweets, Trump said, “We cannot keep FEMA, the Military & the First Responders, who have been amazing (under the most difficult circumstances) in P.R. forever!” Photograph by @andreskudacki for TIME
