Russian President Vladimir Putin received quite the birthday gift from the president of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, in Sochi, Russia, on Oct. 11, 2017. Berdymukhamedov brought Putin, who recently turned 65, a Turkmen shepherd puppy dog that he then picked up by the scruff of its neck and handed to the Russian leader. "We have a common friend," Berdymukhamedov reportedly told Putin. "This is the world's unique alabai dog. And today I brought this little alabai with me." Putin, who apparently named the dog Verny, or "faithful" in Russian, often is seen with animals in propaganda images or videos. He has previously received a dog as a gift. He was gifted a Bulgarian shepherd named Buffy from Bulgaria's leader, the Associated Press reports, and an Akita named Yume from a Japanese official. He has also been given horses and a tiger.
