MoMA was the first art museum to collect cars as examples of modern design. Its very first exhibition of automotive design was “Eight Automobiles,” which opened in August 1951. In his introduction to the catalogue, Arthur Drexler, director of the Department of Architecture and Design, presented the concept of the exhibition with an indelible sentence: “Automobiles are hollow, rolling sculpture.” The cars on display were presented on a specially designed marble “roadway” that extended from the first-floor galleries out into the garden. Drexler’s interest in cars was enduring: he presented the sequel, “Ten Automobiles,” two years later, and in 1966 explored the world of high-speed vehicles with “The Racing Car: Toward a Rational Automobile.” MoMA has since continued this exploration of car design, regularly investigating the topic in special exhibitions. There are currently six cars in MoMA’s collection.
