In 1955, Robert Rauschenberg moved to 278 Pearl Street, joining a growing community of artists living near the southern waterfront area of Manhattan. Jasper Johns, now Rauschenberg's partner, had the loft below him. The pair looked at and discussed each other's work every day. After the city condemned the Pearl Street building, Rauschenberg and Johns moved to another industrial loft at 128 Front Street in March 1958. Here Rauschenberg explored his relationship to the past, incorporating references to classical mythology and literature and creating drawings for each of the 34 cantos of Dante’s Inferno.
