Curator John Szarkowski drew from the extensive files of the New York Daily News to assemble the 1973 exhibition “From the Picture Press.” Organizing them into evocative categories such as “Losers” and “Alarums & Conundrums,” Szarkowski separated the press images from their newspaper context, asking viewers to consider them in their own right. In the exhibition catalogue, he proposed that “news photography might more profitably be studied as a kind of poetry than as a kind of history—that is to say, that we might look at it not merely for what it tells us that is unique and new, but for the ways that it describes to us over and over again, with subtle but constant variation, those few simple and enduring human issues that the medium of news photography has learned to cope with.” Szarkowski conducted preliminary research with celebrated photographer Diane Arbus, who passed away before the exhibition opened.
