In the contemporary art market and museum industry, works in the graffiti and street art (“G&S art" to conserve space here) category are still not that mainstream. Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring might be among the very few major artist in that world, yet they are both deceased. Among the living and active artists, those who make their presence known are KAWS, TWIST, and JR (though I’m sure there are various other theories). If you really think about it, though, Superflat artists like myself, who came out of Japan and debuted with the postwar local subculture as our background, stand as outsiders of sorts, even if we aren’t exactly street artists. Outsiders constantly erode the lineage of conservative mainstream painting, sculpture, and conceptual art, and some get recognized as test cases for whether they would become part of a new history; they face the trial of weathering the hardships. In a sense, at the moment I am myself in the middle of such a test run. As such, it isn’t as if I have spare time to care about other people’s businesses, and yet G&S art tugs at me. It tempts me to put it on the table with conservative mainstream and to prove its inevitability. Because if G&S artists' early creative impulse had been to impress the self on their arena in the forms of tagging and bombing, we could perhaps say that today they are starting to tag and bomb in the territory of contemporary art. For the past three years, we have been incrementally creating exhibitions that explore the nature of G&S art while contemplating how best to land it in the contemporary art world. I have a feeling that the runway is finally starting to take shape. I am really hoping to somehow induce a spontaneous market and a natural chain of reactions within the museum industries in that direction. I am confident that our current show, MADSAKI Says “Yo! snipe1 & UFO907, Get Your Asses Over Here!” will be able to have an impact on that natural current. I hope you will come see it. @madsaki @fukitalltokyo @ufo907 #ozzingaro #hidarizingaro #barzingaro
