Aida Muluneh spent her childhood in Yemen, England, Cyprus, Canada and the United States before settling in the U.S. to study and become a photojournalist. About a decade ago, though, she returned to Ethiopia, where she was born. Today, her photos feature decorative body paintings that reflect #Ethiopian culture, as well as traditional fabrics and baskets. They also reflect her own life’s journey. “We exist between the anxiety of the unknown future and the nostalgia of the familiar past,” @aidamuluneh told the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ #lensblog. “We bear the burden of our duality.” The prevalence of decorative body painting in her photos is rooted in Ethiopian tradition and custom. The materials she uses also play an important role in her work. In some photos — like this image, “City Life” — she features folds of fabric or woven baskets, integrating local craftsmanship into her visual palette.
