Even in a state with some of America’s most troubled and overcrowded prisons, St. Clair Correctional Facility stands out for its history of violence. One of 6 maximum-security #prisons in #Alabama, St. Clair’s campus of low-slung brick buildings is surrounded by a lethal electric fence. In 1985, 2 years after it opened, the men inside revolted, seizing guns, beating 5 officers and holding 22 others hostage. Aside from that, the prison had been kept more or less under control until recent years. By 2015, though, corrections officers began to disappear for long periods. With officers absent or ignored, vulnerable inmates pleaded in vain for help. In one 250-man dorm, inmates put up a sign — “No Officers Beyond This Point” — that was generally heeded over the course of a few weeks. Violence — robberies, assaults, stabbings — was virtually unavoidable. “Like Devil’s Island,” one current inmate said. In October, the Justice Department announced an investigation into all of the male prisons in Alabama. But as legislators wrangle over ideas to fix the prisons, the degeneration of St. Clair looms in the background. @misterwidmer took this photo inside a “faith-based honor dorm,” which houses some of the prison’s general-population inmates.
