Between 1892 and 1954, 12 million immigrants arrived at Ellis Island. Around 10% of them were sent to the Ellis Island Immigrant Hospital and held there indefinitely. As a result, they found themselves in limbo, forced to see glimpses of New York City from their window yet unable to grasp the future they sought. This image by artist and 2011 TED Prize winner JR blends an archival photo of an immigrant family during that time with the present-day remnants of the hospital. “I’m fascinated by the unique stories each person had in moving to America,” he says. “Everyone wants to have a better life and to give their children a better life than theirs. That resonates with people around the world.” For more of @jr work from this project, visit go.ted.com/ellisisland
