This device can close a hole in a baby’s heart without open surgery, and the procedure only takes 30 minutes. It is saving the lives of children all over the world, particularly in high altitude countries like Bolivia where heart defects pose a greater threat. The woven, seamless structure is what makes this tool so effective. Dr. Franz Freudenthal created it with the help of his Bolivian grandmother’s indigenous friends, whose basket weaving inspired the final design. “The most complex problems in our time can be solved with simple techniques, if we are able to dream,” he says.
