There’s a group of over 100 table mountains in Venezuela that reveals a glimpse of what the region looked like 1.7 billion years ago. The largest one stands 2,300 meters tall, and geologist Francesco Sauro explores the mysterious caves deep underneath it in search of clues about primitive times. This photo shows the entrance to the Imawari Yeuta cave system, the largest cave system discovered so far. Francesco calculates it could have taken up to a million years to grow, making it potentially the oldest cave in the world. Some of the walls are even filled with shimmery white and green crystals, adding to the wonder and allure of this incredible marvel of nature.
