Our #FrenchPortraits exhibition contains examples of some experimental techniques and alternative methods. This work is by Albert Lebourg, who is famous for his Impressionist oil paintings. The intimate, velvety piece is a rare example of a drawing completed using the ‘sfumato’ shading technique. The word sfumato derives from the Italian for smoke, and the method involves smooth graduations between light and shadow to create a ‘natural’ effect. Leonardo da Vinci is closely associated with this smoky, shadowy style – most famously seen on the #MonaLisa. #FrenchPortraits #AlbertLebourg #sfumato #drawing #portrait
