Over the last 20 years a team of marine archaeologists, led by Franck Goddio, has been exploring the submerged land off the Mediterranean coast. Their work has led to the rediscovery of two ancient cities – Thonis-Heracleion and Canopus – and revealed a vast number of objects and monuments of unique importance and beauty. These discoveries are transforming our understanding of the relationship between ancient Egypt and the Greek world.

In this photo, one of the underwater archaeologists holds a gold dish (known as a phiale), which was discovered in the ruins of a temple in the ancient city of Thonis-Heracleion. These shallow dishes were used throughout the Greek world for drinking, and especially pouring sacrifices of wine, but they were rare in Egypt. This dish is made from a sheet of gold, most probably hammered into place. The thinness of the gold used for this vessel means that it could be easily bent, suggesting that it was for display and not ritual use. It might therefore have been a dedication in a temple treasury.
