Artists from the 15th century to the present have used drawing as the ultimate thinking medium. From Michelangelo to Mondrian, Rembrandt to Rachel Whiteread, Piranesi to Picasso, artists have used drawing as a means of both recording and provoking thought, giving us insight into the minds of some of the world’s greatest artists at work.
This work by Rembrandt is a study of trees from around 1645. Rembrandt often carried a small sketchbook with him, and most likely made this drawing en plein air (outdoors) in order to record a motif for further development back in the studio.
Our new touring exhibition of 70 drawings is on display at @PooleMuseum from today with other UK venues to follow.
