‘Draw Antonio, draw Antonio, draw and don’t waste time’ – Michelangelo’s comment on one of his student’s drawings has survived nearly 500 years. Our curators believe this advice is just as relevant today and are encouraging art students to study and draw from works in the Museum’s collection.
Over the past 18 months, our curators have welcomed over 700 fine art students to the Museum’s Prints and Drawings Study Room during more than 100 workshops. Generously supported by the Bridget Riley Art Foundation, these workshops have introduced students to drawings by artists from the 15th century to today, and encourage close looking and drawing from them.
The students’ engagement has also inspired a UK touring exhibition of 70 old master and modern drawings. One of the highlights of the exhibition is this dynamic work by Michelangelo, which was a study for his ‘Last Judgement’ in the Sistine Chapel (1536–1541). In this drawing Michelangelo brainstorms various configurations of bodies in defiance of gravity, zooming in to focus on a particular figure, and then out again to take in the whole group.
