This is a smoke helmet used by firefighters and rescuers in the 1890s. It was invented by hardware salesman Willis C. Vajen and his partner William Bader in the early 1890s for use as protection against smoke and fumes. ?

A small tank at the back of the helmet supplied air to the wearer, and it had a whistle on the front that was used to signal other rescuers.

It was marketed for use in mining as well as firefighting.
