This 1880s-1890s bicycle lamp has red and green side lenses to designate left and right, just as many boats do. Lamps like this one would have burned kerosene with a cotton wick. As bicycles became a popular way for young adults to travel away from home and meet up with friends, lamps allowed them to pedal off to socialize unsupervised even after sunset.
