Just what is going on in this ad for the Coraline Corset? Coraline, a substitute for whalebone, was manufactured from ixtle, a plant grown in Mexico. It was advertised as being more flexible (and perhaps providing a more photogenic shape) than whalebone. We wouldn't show up to our desert photo shoot with the Cupid twins without it.

Corsets series, Warshaw Collection of Business Americana, Archives Center, National Museum of American History.
