In 2001, MoMA acquired 341 photographs from Thomas Walther’s collection of early modern photography, featuring iconic works by Berenice Abbott, André Kertész, El Lissitzky, Lucia Moholy, László Moholy-Nagy, Alfred Stieglitz, and Paul Strand, along with lesser-known treasures. Thanks to a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, a team of curators, scholars, conservators, and scientists researched the collection in depth, leading to a catalogue, a website, and now an exhibition, on view through April 19, 2015.
