Fes, Morocco
The Babouche: "A slipper of a style that originated in Morocco and that lacks a heel or quarters." A signature component of Moroccan traditional dress, this beautifully simple slipper is found on the feet of many Moroccans, young and old. Fes remains the leader in the sale and craftsmanship of these Eastern 'flip flops’ which range from soft simple colored leather, to ornately decorated and embroidered design; pointy to rounded, expensive to cheap. Leather for the slippers is prepared in the tanneries, and most are still made by hand. Intrigued by their symmetrical design in this small shop, I couldn’t resist making a picture, as their design reminded me of the scales of a sparkling fish.
