Merzouga, Morocco
The desert can be a harsh place; stunningly beautiful at the same time deceivingly harsh. Those who have adapted to living there, know it’s ways and dress accordingly for function and protection. A signature covering for the Berber people is a blue kaftan, and traditionally, an indigo dyed cotton head scarf or ‘Tagelmust’ which acts as a veil or a turban. Sometimes more than ten meters in length, situating the head scarf correctly on your noggin is a bit of a challenge. These Berber camel guides unravel their head scarves (of varying colors) and re-assemble them for us faster than we can emulate. Their threads blow briefly in the wind and they have them retied before I manage to look up from the camera. Needless to say my own head scarf was a big wrapping mess!
