This weekend saw the sad passing of the British film-maker Terence Davies, one of our most unique voices in cinema. He had a long career right up until 2021’s ‘Benediction’. I found real power in his evocative films based on his working class upbringing in Liverpool. If you haven’t seen ‘Distant Voices, Still Lives’ or ‘The Long Day Closes’, they are two of the best British films of this period; hypnotic in their detail and bittersweet beauty.

I never met Terence, but his passion for cinema was always evident, not least in his top 10 list for Sight & Sound magazine last year, which was so utterly joyous that I had to read the entire article out at the launch last year. RIP Mr Davies, you will be much missed.
