It wasn’t my first time seeing it, nor the first time seeing it on the big screen, but it is one of those films that is so magical and inventive that it feels fresh and new even 77 years since its release. There are matte paintings, ingenious angles, and brilliant uses of colour that still take my breath away. The level of artistry and the overflowing ideas within are just staggering in their beauty, but also in their simplicity. And they wrote it too, (a perfect screenplay!), which is no mean feat in itself. If you get a chance to go and see any of the Powell & Pressburger films on re-release around the country this season, they are joyous works of art that can make anyone fall in love with the form.
