In this long collaborative process we are exploring transferring our less wasteful studio practices to the @lavenham framework and product. During this journey we have trialed re looking at their production material surplus, using design to utilise pre-consumer production off cuts and omitting and replacing synthetic garment content. Upon visiting the Lavenham factory we noticed how in order to deliver perfect stitching for their quilting, they trial any new quilt design onto left over fabric. Run through the quilting machines several times in order to check the stitch quality is perfect, layer upon layer of different quilting designs over lay each other, creating a new beautifully chaotic pattern of over quilting. As these are working textiles, each piece of fabric run through the machines like this are unique to itself; we found so much beauty in this working process. Lavenham saved up these lengths of over quilted trials for us to use in our collaboration. From these lengths we developed a series of bags. These are designed to be adjustable by the wearer with changeable straps and ties resulting in a bag that can be many shapes and sizes with straps that also can be various lengths. The nature of the fabric is dictated by which pattern was being trialed on a particular day, so each bag we created was therefore unique.
