As their name suggests, desert bighorn sheep are well adapted to living in a harsh and unwelcoming environment. Not only can their body temperature safely fluctuate by several degrees depending on the outside temperature, these sheep can go weeks or months without access to a permanent water source. This may sound like a recipe for success, but competition with livestock took a heavy toll on this species’ population in the early 20th century. After making a comeback mid-century, an epidemic in the 1970s dealt this species another blow. Their most recent rebound is thanks to captive breeding efforts and careful management by wildlife professionals, though the species is still threatened with extinction. Photo taken @desertmuseum.
