The Mississippi sandhill crane is one of six subspecies found in North America. Listed as an endangered species in the US, this bird has lost much of its native habitat along the Gulf Coast to development projects and invasive plants. While managed breeding flocks are helping to boost the crane’s numbers, their population is still extremely small. In addition to a lack of suitable habitat, recovery is limited by the bird’s reproduction cycle, with mated pairs raising only one brood per year, often consisting of no more than two eggs.
