Happy Lunar New Year! It’s officially the Year of the Ox. Lunar New Year is based on the Chinese zodiac, a 12-year cycle in which a different animal represents each year. Chineasy — a visual learning system to read and write Chinese — created these amazing illustrations of the animals (accompanied by their corresponding characters). Chineasy founder ShaoLan Hsueh says the zodiac system exerts a surprising amount of influence over many people’s lives. “If you ask people in China if they believe in the zodiac, many will initially say, ‘No, no. We are modern," she explains. "But if you ask them when they want to have children, they’ll say, ‘Hey, it’s not a bad idea to have a Dragon baby."
