They live in a part of India that receives the most rainfall in the world, and travel between their villages is cut off in monsoon season. These bridges help keep them connected. Created by guiding (and growing) tree roots through a woven scaffolding, a completed bridge can last for centuries. But building one takes time — nearly 50 years (!). Architect Julia Watson (@juliawatsonstudio) studies Indigenous designs like this in order to understand how we can counter the effects of climate change. “We have thousands of years of ancient knowledge that we just need to listen to and allow it to expand our thinking about designing symbiotically with nature,” she explains.
