This week’s shock enters the category of, “Things I Didn’t Appreciate Until They Were Gone” 🧐 I never thought I’d think of the humble “California Roll” as a comfort food, but turns out it is. The sushi + maki rolls available in Japan are both super cheap, and freaking delicious. I was surprised, however, to find that the easily accessible “California Roll” I grew up eating in Canada (and USA) just didn’t exist inside Japan. In hindsight, of course that makes sense, but that didn’t stifle the craving I had for the sushi staple. A comfort food is something personal. It doesn’t have to be spectacularly high quality or even delicious... it just hits the spot 🤤 Sparks joy. You may not want to eat it ALL the time, but it is comforting when you do. And so, “California Rolls” are apparently a comfort food to me.
