Lions have always played an important part in Samburu and Masai culture here in Kenya. Traditionally it was viewed as a rite of passage (known as ‘ala-mayo’) when an initiate killed a lion to demonstrate his dominance, a symbol of strength and power, and thus he passed into warrior-hood as a Moran. But thankfully no more. Now this has changed, and lions are not hunted ceremonially, however, when they kill livestock occasionally they will still be hunted in revenge. I’ve worked for many years now with @ewasolions who do a magnificent job of mitigating human-wildlife conflict, but occasionally unavoidable deaths occur, either natural mortality, or conflict-related. When they do occur, these skins are taken by Kenya Wildlife Services who dry and hold them securely until communities request them for ceremonies. Once the ceremony is over they are returned. Thus, important cultural traditions can be maintained without placing further threat upon the fragile lion populations here in northern Kenya.
