Pag-Asa (the Filipino word for Hope) was the first captive bred Philippine Eagle ever. Produced by artificial insemination, a new technique at that time, he was imprinted on his caretaker Eddie Juntilla who cared for him for almost 29 years. The Philippine Eagle is one of the biggest eagles in the world - and one of the rarest. They are endemic to the Philippines and as a forest eagle they suffered severely by deforestation. Today there are less than 400 pairs remaining in the wild. This photo was taken in 2006 when I met Pag-Asa and Eddie during an assignment for Nat Geo on a story about the life of the Philippine Eagle. Without the unmatched help of the team of the Philippine Eagle Foundation this story would not have been possible.
