Photos by @joshuawhitephoto // Every year in the fall, people all across the country harvest sorghum and host cane boils to make sorghum molasses. As much a community event as anything, these gatherings feature music, food, and old friends. The boil lasts all day, starting with running the cane through the mill in the morning, boiling all day, and watching the boiler closely into the evening to determine the all-important moment that the molasses is taken off the heat and bottled. These images were made using the wet plate collodion process, introduced in the 1850s. After setting up my portable darkroom, I pour a plate, sensitize, develop, and fix all on-site, yielding a unique positive image. Making handmade images under the same sky as my community and subjects gather is one of the things that draws me to this arduous process.
