The Cuban revolutionary leader came to power in 1959 and died on November 25, 2016. Fidel was 90 years old. His ashes were taken to the Ilfigenia Cemetery in Santiago and interred by his brother Raul Castro, who placed the urn inside a giant boulder and behind a marble plaque with the name “Fidel,” next to where the Cuban independence hero Jose Marti is buried. “The government organized the procession so that every road would be lined with people as it passed by. In some cases, rural roads with no towns nearby were lined with people whom the government had brought in on buses….Despite the enforced mourning, there was a sense that each individual was also genuinely interested in observing the historic moment.” - Delaney Chambers, National Geographic.
