"I wanted to include an African sensitivity into the work, which was very contemporary. I was looking at African rituals as a way of connecting with my 'African half,' as it were, while using the latest technology. In the early '80s video was still in its infancy, it was still new. In a sense, the 'primitive' element was video itself."
Berlin-based, British-Ethiopian artist @theoeshetu caught up with curator @smoothugochukwuc to share the inspirations behind his 1980s video installation, "Till Death Us Do Part"—"the seed from which all my ideas grew." Their conversation spans 1980s media culture, ethnography and museums, and the artist's desire to "transform the neutral gallery space into a kind of sacred space."
Experience the work in our new second-floor collection gallery, The Sum of All Parts.
