The trees are very large and massive, the foreground very low, brambles and brush. Behind, purple hills, a green and pink sky with a crescent moon. The foreground especially is very thick, tufts of brambles with yellow, purple and green reflections. I will send you drawings of it along with two other drawings that I have made. That will keep me busy for the next few days. Finding something to do all day is the big thing here."  The artist's letters offer an intimate glimpse into his heart and mind.
