When I think about “resetting”, I’ve sat uncomfortably with the former interpretation. I don’t want things going back to ‘normal’, to a time of comfort, safety and emotional/ economic security for those with privilege.
‘Normal’ excluded millions of marginalized people in this country. ‘Normal’ was an America in which 38 million lived in poverty (disproportionately Black and Hispanic). Normal in America means living in a system that does not serve its people equally.

While progress is being made on these issues, I’ve been grappling with the question, “what am I doing to create a more equitable place in my community?” To this, I’ve found power in the words of social activist Mariame Kaba,

“Try to reduce the gap between your values and your actions.”

Climbing has historically been an activity for the privileged. The recent increase in popularity has resulted in the building of new climbing gyms all over the country, but the economic barriers to enter still lingers.

Climbing is expensive: harness, ropes, shoes, gym membership, car, gas, and the luxury of time. It all adds up real quick.

As a daughter of immigrant parents who worked hours on end just to put food on the table, I should not be a climber. However through the sacrifices of my parents combined with gracious people (donated equipment/gym memberships/time) I am where I am today.

So I am here to reset, to renew my love for climbing and for its community. I am here to spread the joys and benefits of outdoor activity and remain hopeful of what will come upon collectively embracing change. I pledge to reset my focus on contributing to marginalized communities in ways that will help foster more accessible, welcoming, and supportive outdoor spaces.

Also, I’d love to see how all of you plan to reset your mind and actions to what ‘normal’ looks like in your community.
