Nothing is for naught. When the precipice of seasons began to turn I’d call my dad and spill secrets of briars and brambles stuck to my dungarees from excursions into wooded terrain with my head up in the clouds tripping over sticks and rocks, crunchy leaves and hives. I’d prattle for eons with him listening gently and a smile I could feel — isn’t it funny how we can feel smiles through the phone? He always seemed to know what to say, an elixir of words that would turn my upside down sideways world back to right side up again and all was well. I miss our talks. He was once an extra in an old western film as a horse rider, don’t ask which one, I can’t remember the name off the top. My son gifted me the horses here too, knowing I’ve wished for them since four year old birthday candles. We’ve been stuck inside a pandemic-laden season, we get stuck in our own patches too, but as my dad would say, no matter the thorns, thistles and thickets, there is always a way out and through. It’s been a wild wild west chapter over here, well before quarantined lifestyles anchored in, well before the turn of the decade a year ago. My dungarees are ever splotched and dusty, but I can see the canyon not so far off in the distance, sheltered in place or not, with cotton candy skies that hold a presence much like my dad’s elixir of words. Out and through, this time I’m smiling. I take a paint brush and douse it on my mud covered hands and draw billowy lines and remember that mud and dust and grindstone too make for some beautiful art. It all might be side ways still but I’m feeling right side up again and all is well.
