It is so much more of a welcoming and inclusive environment than I would have ever guessed. The best way to continue that progress is to get more people in the door. One of the most healing moments for me – after growing up in a small western town – was trying to figure out whether or not I would be able to be ‘out’ here at work. Would I be able to talk openly about my weekend with my partner and our life? Would I be able to bring the fullest version of myself through these doors? And the healing piece came for me on my very first day, when the Director swore-in our class of new employees and I saw the pride rainbow on his lanyard, which I later learned was the lanyard for the Agency Network of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Officers and Allies (ANGLE), an employee resource group at CIA. I remember a feeling of disbelief, surely that’s not the pride rainbow?
