Originally, they were constructed from their ancestors' hair, but most today are made with wool that's been woven around horn-shaped wooden combs — a tribute to the oxen and water buffalo that are crucial to Miao life. Photographer Jimmy Nelson (@jimmy.nelson.official) has spent years traveling the world to meet and photograph Indigenous peoples in some of the most remote places on earth. His goal: To document the beauty and diversity of cultures and customs that are in danger of vanishing. “The idea is that the whole world can get access to what’s going on behind the pictures, see who these people really are and dispel myths about them,” Nelson says. “I want to show you the soul of these people."
