Liberato Kani (@liberatokani ) is a hip hop artist in Lima, Peru — or as he calls it — “the Andean Bronx.” He is known for rapping in Quechua, an indigenous language originally spoken by the Incas in Peru. His concerts often include the phrase: “Quechua es resistencia” — Quechua is resistance. That’s because, although the language is spoken by over 8 million people, actually speaking the language is heavily stigmatized in Peru because of anti-indigenous prejudice. To prevent Quechua from being lost forever, Liberato and fellow musicians like Renata Flores (@renatafloresrivera ) and producer Kayfex (@kayfexmusic ) are creating music that celebrates this ancient language and is aimed at inspiring a new generation of people to speak Quechua. These artists hope that this music restores their country’s pride in their native traditions, culture, and language. Hear their story on our podcast Pindrop, and visit our stories to learn more!
