I’ve seen them climb like a cat, plus they sound other-worldly. And their smell is unforgettable as well—very pungent! Super wary and hard to see in the wild, dholes historically ran in 100-member packs, but too much human pressure has greatly decreased this amazing animal across its range, and populations in mainland Southeast Asia and Indonesia hover on the brink of extinction. In areas where they still exist, dholes have been observed merging into packs of up to 30 individuals in order to hunt larger prey like buffalo and deer. These groups will separate shortly after the hunt concludes, reverting back to their smaller family units. Within the pack, individuals can be easily identified thanks to highly distinctive calls that are unique to each dhole.
